How do I set up a payment?
To set up a payment you select Payment Mandates from the options menu on your accounts summary screen, this will take you into the Payment Mandates screen. This shows a list of payment mandates currently set up on your account.

To create a new mandate you select the Create button, this will take you into the Create Payment Mandate screen. Complete the relevant details and select the Continue button. An authorisation code will be sent to your mobile phone and the mandate details you have entered will be displayed back to you to confirm. For security purposes you will be asked 2 security questions and you will be required to enter your authorisation code that we sent to your mobile phone. You are now ready to create the mandate by clicking the Create button. You will receive a message to advise whether or not your request has been successful. You will also receive an e-mail advising that your mandate has been created.

Why do I need my mobile phone when creating a payment mandate?
To improve our online security an authorisation code will be sent to your mobile phone when setting up a payment mandate. You will be asked to enter your code along with your normal security answers.

If I have updated my mobile phone number online will I be able create a new payment mandate immediately?
For security reasons, we're only able to text the authorisation code to the number we already hold. If you have changed your mobile number recently you'll be directed to our Service Centre who'll be able to assist you.

How do I make a payment?
To make a payment you select Make a payment from the options menu on your accounts summary screen, this will take you into the Make a payment screen. This shows a list that includes your nominated account and your Sainsbury's Bank Credit Card account(s) if applicable. You can now select the account you wish to make a payment to and the amount. You are now ready to submit the payment by clicking the pay now button. You will receive a message to advise whether or not your request has been successful.

Once you have clicked on pay now you cannot cancel the payment!

What should I do if the payment I want to make is not available?

You can set up a new payment by following the steps above.

Can I set up a payment with a future date?

Any payments that you make will be instructed immediately and cannot be cancelled or amended.

When will my payment be debited?

For transactions instructed before 5pm on a bank working day your current balance and available balance will change immediately.

For payments instructed after 5pm on a bank working day, or on a non bank working day, your current balance and available balance will change immediately but the transaction date will be shown as the next bank working day.

What is Available or Current Balance?

 

Available Balance
The Available Balance is the balance in your account, which is available for you to withdraw or can be used to create an immediate bill payment. This is the Current Balance less the value of any cheques paid in, which are still in the process of clearing. This balance may change throughout the day as  transactions occur, e.g.  withdrawals and deposits, are applied to your account. Clearing usually takes up to  three business days and will depend upon which bank the cheque was drawn.

The Current Balance may include cheques that have been paid in, but are still in the process of clearing. This balance may change throughout the day as  transactions, e.g.  withdrawals and deposits, are applied to your account.

Why do I need to answer security questions when setting up a payment?

As part of our ongoing commitment to the security of Sainsbury's Bank Online we ask additional security questions each time you set up a new payment mandate using the online service.

When will the beneficiary receive the payment?

Payments To A Non Sainsbury's Bank Account
If the beneficiary bank sort code is part of the Faster Payment Scheme, payment instructions received before 5pm, Monday to Friday, will arrive in the account by midnight the same bank working day. If we receive your instructions after this time, the money will reach the account by midnight of the next business day.

If the beneficiary bank sort code is not part of the Faster Payment Scheme, payment instructions received before 5pm, Monday to Friday, will take approximately 3 bank working days to arrive in the account.

Payments To A Sainsbury's Bank Savings Account
If you are making a payment to another Sainsbury's Bank savings account the payment will be available immediately.

Payments To A Sainsbury's Bank Credit Card
If you are making a payment to a Sainsbury's Bank Credit Card, payment instructions received before 5pm, Monday to Friday, will arrive in the account by midnight the same bank working day. If we receive your instructions after this time, the money will reach the account by midnight of the next business day.

Can I make a payment to my Cash ISA?

You can make a payment to your Cash ISA however for your Cash ISA to remain valid you must not exceed the maximum annual subscription.

Can I make a payment from my Cash ISA?

You can make a payment from your Cash ISA however any funds withdrawn cannot be redeposited.
